This Oqaatsut day provides a great combination of adventure and cultural immersion. It also allows you to experience a typical day in Greenland. Explore this traditional local settlement along with its wonderfully colourful wooden houses. Paddle next to giant icebergs while enjoying the stunning scenery. This day is guaranteed to be something quite special.
In a small settlement of less than 40 inhabitants, we will be exposed to the simplicity of life. Beauty does not always come the most obviously places. It can be found in the most unexpected places like near a small red shed in the middle of a snowy field.
The small community of Oqaatsut belongs to fishermen. We are likely to see the fishermen in the summer. This is when you will find the people of this lovely trade making the most on the midnight sun and long days to try and collect the finest of all fishes, Halibut. Once the winter months arrive these locals must switch their boats for sleds.
Experience local life in the charming town of Oqaatsut, Greenalnd
We paddle for two hours in this stunning location and learn about Inuit life, ice formation, at a leisure pace. Back on shore we go for a well-deserved swim in Greenlandic waters, testing our dry suit.
Back from our kayaking glory, the reward to our efforts is a lovely lunch in a local family. We are lucky to have excellent Greenlandic guides with us, allowing to engage and interact further with the local community.
After lunch, we still have a little more time to explore Oqaatsut. Afterwards, we board the boat back to Ilulissat. This is where another magical moment may occur as we get to see the perpetual sunlight of the polar summer painting the icebergs. The Oqaatsut settlement offers a fantastic view into the wide and fascinating world of Greenland’s people.
